Menus

Three formats, separated by how many hands touch them. A dine-in menu is handled at every table every service; a take-out menu leaves with the customer and lives in a drawer for months. Filter by where the menu ends up.

How to choose
between them

A dine-in menu is reused between customers, so lamination is a hygiene and maintenance decision rather than an upgrade. An uncoated menu absorbs whatever it touches and the marks are permanent. A take-out menu is handled by one household and then filed in a drawer, so that durability is wasted money; spend it on distributing more of them instead. Pocket menus trade content for reach, and work best as a curated selection rather than a shrunken full menu.

Legibility is the most common complaint and it is nearly always fixed in specification rather than design. Menus are read in low light by people who did not bring their glasses, so type below about nine point stops working and low-contrast type on a dark ground compounds it. Print a proof and read it in the actual room. And if prices change often, keep them on a separate insert: reprinting one sheet costs a fraction of a full run of laminated menus.
