Custom Door Hangers

Custom door hangers cover the sizes, shapes and die cuts that fall outside the standard and small formats. Useful when a design calls for a particular silhouette, an unusual aspect ratio, or a size built to match a specific campaign rather than a stock template. They work the same way any door hanger does: a slot or notch lets it hang on a doorknob, putting a message directly in front of a resident or business without needing a mailing address. Real estate agents, home service companies and local campaigns tend to reach for a custom shape when a standard rectangle doesn't fit the design they have in mind.

A door hanger's defining feature is mechanical, not artistic: a slot or notch cut to fit over a doorknob, which lets a message reach a specific address without an envelope or a mail carrier. "Custom" in this category means the size, shape and die cut are built around a specific need rather than pulled from a standard or small template: a taller silhouette, a rounded top, or dimensions matched to a particular design concept.

Real estate is one of the most common uses, with agents hanging listing details, open house notices or "just sold" announcements directly on doors in a target neighborhood. Home service companies (pest control, lawn care, HVAC, cleaning) use the same format for service reminders and seasonal promotions, since a door hanger reaches a household reliably in a way a mailed piece sometimes doesn't. Local political and community campaigns rely on them for canvassing, and retailers occasionally use them for coupon drops in dense residential or commercial areas.

Construction follows a few consistent choices regardless of the custom shape: where the doorknob slot sits relative to the overall design, whether the piece is printed on one side or both (double-sided makes sense for glass doors where both faces are visible), and the coated stock weight needed to survive being handled and occasionally left outdoors overnight. A laminate layer adds real value for anything that might sit on a door through rain or humidity before it's noticed.

Because a custom die shape takes more setup time than a standard rectangle, it's worth finalizing the design and size early rather than adjusting after production begins. It also helps to think through distribution before ordering. A canvassing route or targeted neighborhood list determines the quantity needed, and whether the piece needs to hold up to a single afternoon of hanging or survive several days of weather before someone gets to it.

Every layer is a decision.

Layer 01

Stock

A door hanger is left outdoors on a handle, often for hours and sometimes overnight, so stock choice is about surviving weather rather than about feel. Card below about 250gsm goes limp in damp air and slides off the handle. Cover weights from 300gsm upward hold their shape, and for anything left in genuinely wet conditions a synthetic stock stops being an upgrade and becomes the only option.

250gsm 300gsm (most ordered) 350gsm+ Synthetic / weatherproof

Will it survive rain? Coated card handles damp air for a day. Sustained rain needs lamination or a synthetic stock. Plain card turns to pulp.

Layer 02

Print and the read-at-the-door moment

A door hanger is read by someone standing at their own front door with their keys in their hand, deciding in about two seconds whether it is worth keeping. That is a harsher filter than almost any other printed format faces. The offer and who it is from have to be legible at arm's length without being picked up, and everything else is secondary.

4/4 both sides One clear offer + PMS spot color

What has to be readable without picking it up? Who it is from and what the offer is. If those two are not clear at arm's length, it goes in the bin at the door.

Layer 03

Coating

Coating on a door hanger is weather protection first and appearance second. Gloss sheds light rain and wipes clean; matte reads calmer but absorbs more. Full lamination is the real step up. It makes the piece genuinely water resistant rather than merely water tolerant, which matters for anything distributed in a season where rain is likely.

Gloss Matte Laminated (weatherproof) Uncoated

Is lamination worth the cost? If distribution is weather-dependent, it is cheaper than reprinting a run that turned to pulp on people's doors.

Layer 04

Die-cut hole and slot

The hanger works through a punched hole with a slot cut from it to the top edge, so it slides over a handle rather than needing to be lifted over it. The slot width and the hole diameter both matter: too tight and it will not go on modern lever handles, too loose and it blows off in wind. Rounded corners around the hole stop the card tearing where the load sits.

Punched hole and slot Sized for lever handles Rounded corners

Why do mine keep falling off? Usually a hole too large for the handle, or a slot cut too wide. Both let wind lift the hanger free.

Layer 05

Your size, shape and die

For anything outside the standard formats. An unusual size, a shaped outline, a perforated tear-off coupon, a die-cut that follows a product silhouette, or a hole sized for a specific type of handle. The tooling is a one-off carried into the first order and reused on reprints, so a shaped hanger gets cheaper on a repeat run.

Your dimensions Shaped outline Tear-off coupon Custom hole size

Can it have a tear-off section? Yes. A perforated coupon or reply stub. It is the cheapest way to make door-to-door distribution measurable.

Where a door hanger stops
looking printed

01

Lamination

A bonded film that makes the hanger genuinely water resistant rather than merely water tolerant. On weather-dependent distribution it is cheaper than reprinting a run that turned to pulp on people's doors.

02

Die-cut hole and slot

The hole punched and the slot cut through to the top edge so the hanger slides over a handle. Both dimensions are set against modern lever handles rather than to an old standard.

03

Perforated tear-off

A coupon, voucher or reply stub that detaches. It is the cheapest way to make door-to-door distribution measurable, since a returned stub proves the route worked.

04

Shaped die-cutting

An outline that follows a product or logo rather than a rectangle. On a door full of rectangular flyers, a shaped hanger is the one that gets looked at rather than swept up.

Turnaround & shipping

Six stages,
start to
doorstep

The clock starts when you approve the proof, not when you place the order. Scroll through the production sequence.

Stage 01

Artwork, hole and slot

We check the artwork against the die, and specifically that nothing important sits where the hole and slot are cut. Content lost into the hole is the most common door-hanger artwork error.

Stage 02

Proof

A digital proof with the outline, hole and slot marked, plus any perforation line. You see exactly where the die removes material before anything is printed.

Stage 03

Print

Full color both sides plus any spot colors. Both faces matter here. A hanger is seen from the outside on the door and from the other side as it is taken off.

Stage 04

Coating

Lamination bonded and left to set. On weatherproof jobs this stage is not compressed, because a laminate cut before it has bonded lifts at the edges and lets water straight in.

Stage 05

Die-cut and perforate

The outline, hole and slot are cut in one pass, and any tear-off perforation added. The slot width is set for lever handles rather than to a legacy standard.

Stage 06

Pack and ship

Boxed flat in counted bundles, banded so the hangers do not bow. We ship tracked, and the tracking number reaches you the day it leaves.

FAQ (Custom Door Hangers)

Asked about
this product,
specifically

Can it have a tear-off section?

Yes. A perforated coupon, voucher or reply stub. It is the cheapest way to make door-to-door distribution measurable, because a returned stub tells you which route actually produced response.

Can the hole be sized for a specific handle?

Yes. If you are targeting properties with unusual or older handles, tell us and we will size the hole and slot for them. A hanger that will not fit the handles on the route is a wasted print run.

Can it be a shape rather than a rectangle?

Yes, and on a door already carrying rectangular flyers it is the one that gets looked at. The die is a one-off reused on reprints, so a repeat campaign amortises it.

What stock for a rainy season campaign?

Laminated card at minimum, synthetic if the campaign runs through sustained wet weather. Plain card left on doors in rain turns to pulp, and the reprint costs far more than the lamination would have.

How much do custom door hangers cost?

Pricing for custom door hangers starts at $170 and moves with quantity, size, material and finish rather than sitting on a fixed list. Setup is shared across the run, so the per-unit price drops steeply as the quantity rises: the gap between a few hundred and a few thousand is usually the significant one. Send the size, quantity and what it has to do and you get a firm figure back, not a range.

What is the minimum order for custom door hangers?

There is a practical minimum rather than a hard one. Every run carries artwork checks, a proof and a press setup, so a very small quantity of custom door hangers prices poorly per unit even though we will still make it. If you are ordering a small batch, ask for pricing at two or three quantities at once: the curve usually shows that a modest increase costs very little more in total.

How long do custom door hangers take to print?

The clock starts when you approve the proof, not when the order is placed, which is the part most people are surprised by. You get a proof first: a digital proof with the outline, hole and slot marked, plus any perforation line. You see exactly where the die removes material before anything is printed. Turnaround after approval depends on the finish: anything laminated, foiled or die-cut adds a stage that cannot be compressed without causing problems later. Tell us the date you actually need them and we will work backwards from it rather than quoting a generic lead time.

What artwork do you need to print custom door hangers?

Print-ready artwork with bleed and a safe margin, supplied as a PDF, AI or EPS. Because this product is cut to a shape, the file also needs a live vector path for the blade to follow. A JPG or PNG has no outline to cut to, so it has to be redrawn first. If your file is not print-ready, say so when you order. We would rather fix it before the proof than after the run.

Can I order custom door hangers in a custom size or shape?

Yes. Your size, shape and die is the standard build, and the dimensions around it are yours to set. A size that sits efficiently on the press sheet often costs no more than a standard one, while an awkward proportion that wastes half the sheet does. Ask before you commit and we will tell you whether a small change to the dimensions saves a disproportionate amount.

What is the difference between custom door hangers and custom custom door hangers?

In most cases they are the same product under a different name: the trade uses several terms for it depending on the region and the supplier. What actually defines this one is the build: your size, shape or coupon. Order it when a shape, a tear-off or a special handle. If you have seen it called custom door hangers printing elsewhere, describe what it has to do rather than which name you found, and we will match the specification.

Can I get a sample of your custom door hangers before ordering?

Yes. We provide free samples, and on custom door hangers it is worth asking for one, because the difference between card and cover weight is obvious in the hand and invisible on a screen. Most orders run on cover weight, but ask for whichever you are weighing up. You also get a free design proof before anything goes to press, so nothing is printed that you have not seen.

What finishing options are available for custom door hangers?

The usual choices are lamination, die-cut hole and slot, perforated tear-off. Finish is not decoration on this product so much as a decision about how long it survives and how it reads in the hand, so it is worth choosing against the job rather than the budget. Tell us where the finished piece ends up and we will say which finish is doing real work and which is only adding cost.

Can I print custom door hangers with my own logo and branding?

Yes, and that is what almost every order here is. Nothing in this catalogue is a stock item: custom door hangers are manufactured to the specification you give us, with your artwork on them. Send your logo as vector artwork where you have it, since that scales to any size without softening. If all you have is a low-resolution file, tell us and we will say what it needs before it reaches the press.

Can I reorder the same custom door hangers later?

Yes, and a repeat run is simpler than the first one. We keep your approved specification on file, so a reorder skips the setup decisions and goes straight to production. Where the job used custom tooling, that tooling is reused, which is why a shaped run costs less the second time. Tell us the previous order and we will match it rather than starting the specification again.

Do you ship custom door hangers across the US and Canada?

Yes. Regalo Print has been producing custom commercial print for businesses across the USA and Canada since 2008, and every order ships tracked. The tracking number reaches you the day the job leaves, not the day it arrives. If you are working to a fixed date, say so when you order so the production schedule is built around the delivery date rather than the other way round.
